Nothing stalls a ring purchase like one missing number. The good news: you can find your ring size at home in about two minutes, with things already in your kitchen drawer, and get it right the first time. Here are the two methods that actually work, the mistakes that skew them, and what to do if you land between sizes.
Method 1: measure a ring you already own
The most accurate home method, because it measures a fit your finger has already approved.
- Take a ring that fits the exact finger you're buying for.
- Lay it flat on a ruler and measure the inside of the ring at its widest point, inner edge to inner edge. You're measuring the hole, not the metal.
- Round to the nearest half millimetre. That inner diameter is your number: for example, around 16.5 mm corresponds to a UK L / US 6.

If the ring isn't perfectly round, measure the shortest distance across instead.
Method 2: the string test
No ring to measure? A strip of paper or a piece of non-stretchy string does it:
- Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger, snug means it moves over the skin without digging in.
- Mark exactly where it overlaps, then measure the length in millimetres against a ruler. That's your finger's circumference.
- Convert it on the chart (circumference is simply the diameter times 3.14, so 52 mm around equals roughly 16.5 mm across).
- Do it three times and take the middle result, string tension varies more than you'd think.
The mistakes that skew your size
- Measuring cold hands. Fingers shrink noticeably in the cold and swell in heat. Measure at room temperature, ideally at the end of the day when fingers are at their true size.
- Measuring the wrong hand. The same finger on your left and right hand can differ by half a size. Measure the hand that will wear the ring.
- Ignoring the knuckle. If your knuckle is clearly wider than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size between them, the ring has to travel over the knuckle but sit at the base.
- Forgetting band width. Wider bands fit more snugly than slim ones. For a chunky band, go up half a size from your measured number.
Between two sizes? Go up
A slightly loose ring spins a little; a slightly tight ring pinches all day and fights you at the knuckle. When your measurement lands between sizes, take the larger one. Sizing a ring for a surprise proposal
The classic problem: you need their size without asking. Three quiet routes, in order of accuracy:
- Borrow a ring they wear on that finger (left-hand ring finger for most). Measure its inner diameter as in method 1, or trace the inside circle on paper and measure that.
- Recruit an accomplice. A friend or family member can often get the size in a way that reads as girl talk rather than reconnaissance.

Frequently asked questions
What's the most common ring size?
Most women's rings fall between UK J and P (roughly US 5 to 8), most men's between UK P and V (US 8 to 11). Useful as a sanity check, never as a substitute for measuring.
Do finger sizes change?
Constantly, within a small range: temperature, salt, exercise and time of day all move them. That's why end-of-day, room-temperature measuring gives the truest number.
Can I use one of those printable ring sizers?
Only if printed at exactly 100% scale, printers love to "fit to page" and quietly shrink everything. The ruler and string methods dodge that entirely.
My knuckle is much bigger than my finger base. What do I do?
Measure both, pick a size roughly midway, and prefer slightly larger. The ring needs to pass the knuckle once, then sit comfortably below it.
What if I order the wrong size anyway?
